Import & Export in the UK (2026 Update): What Migrants Like Us Must Know

Import and Export

If you’re in the import and export business, or you’re planning to start in 2026, you need to understand one thing clearly: the rules have changed, and they have changed properly. This is no longer the UK of “manage it and pass.” Things are stricter, more digital, and far less forgiving. But once you understand the system, you can still do very well.

The UK Is Much Stricter at the Borders Now

One big truth many people are still catching up with is that the UK has tightened its borders significantly. Since 2024, the government has been rolling out something called the Border Target Operating Model, and by 2026, it will be fully enforced. What this means in real life is simple: almost everything coming into the UK is checked more carefully now.

Food items, plant products, beauty goods, baby products, and anything that affects health or safety get extra attention. Before, small paperwork mistakes could sometimes slide. Now, even a tiny error can delay your goods at the port for days, and storage fees will start piling up quietly. Many people only realise this when their shipment is already stuck, which is why I always say it’s better to know before you ship.

Importing Is Fully Digital Now — No Shortcuts

If you’re still thinking in the old way, I won’t lie to you, you’ll struggle. The UK has moved almost everything to digital systems. Customs declarations now go through CDS; the old system is completely gone. Depending on what you’re importing, you may also need systems like GVMS or IPAFFS.

This is where problems usually start. If you or your clearing agent doesn’t understand these platforms properly, your goods won’t move. They’ll just sit at the border looking pretty while your money is trapped. In 2026, there’s no going back to paper-based or “manual” methods. You either understand the systems, or you pay for not understanding them.

Costs Have Increased, So Your Budget Must Be Realistic

Another thing I must warn you about is cost. Importing into the UK is more expensive now, and not just because of shipping. Customs charges, VAT, clearance fees, inspections, and even storage fees have all increased. Sometimes, you think you’ve calculated everything, then HMRC adds one extra charge that wasn’t in your initial plan.

This is why I always advise people to leave breathing room in their budget. Importing is still profitable, but only if you plan properly. Going in tight will only stress you.

Some Goods Get More Scrutiny Than Others

Not all products are treated equally. Items like food, cosmetics, electronics, organic materials, and baby products are watched very closely. Packaging, labelling, and product descriptions must meet UK standards. If your supplier doesn’t understand this, you’re the one who will suffer.

I’ve seen people lose serious money because a label was wrong or a product description didn’t match what was inside the box. The UK doesn’t joke with compliance, and there’s no pity once rules are broken.

Your Supplier Must Be Legit, Not Just “Your Plug”

In 2026, the UK wants proof. Real proof. You need proper documents, proof of origin, accurate invoices, and clear product descriptions. Saying “I trust my supplier” doesn’t mean anything to the system.

This is why it’s safer to work with suppliers who understand UK requirements, not just those offering the cheapest deal. A cheap product with bad paperwork can cost you far more in the long run.

My Honest Advice Going Into 2026

Import and export is still great businesses in the UK, but this is not the year for guesswork. Move slowly, start small, double-check everything, and work with agents who actually understand the system. If you trade smart, not hard, you’ll save yourself money, stress, and sleepless nights.

I’m sharing this because I’d rather you be prepared than learn the hard way. You can succeed here — you just need to move wisely.
